Elementary School Learning Garden Complete
May 23rd, 2017
In support of our 30 for 30 campaign, TO Design, LLC teamed up with the Consolidated School District of New Britain (CSDNB), to design, build and install a learning garden at Holmes Elementary School. Our effort consisted of creating a master plan of the learning garden, instructing school staff on the build of raised garden beds, and teaching the kindergarten classes how to plant vegetables.
This past Friday, TO Design staffers Kerrine Catucci and Jon Tunsky led three kindergarten classes in a hands-on learning experience in planting vegetables. It was a pleasure to watch and listen to the joy and pride the kids felt as they planted vegetables. Some children took part in planting tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, eggplant and squash from seedlings, while others planted carrots and radishes from seeds. Each plant was tagged with a label of the plant name and the names of the kids that planted the specific plant/seeds. This way, the children can watch the seedlings grow and the seeds sprout, be able to identify which plant was theirs, and eventually harvest what they have grown.
Thank you to the Holmes Elementary School for the opportunity to work with your staff and the children in your Learning Garden! Our hope is that the learning garden will be used as a teaching tool for their students, learning valuable lessons – not just about nutrition, but also about science and math, all while spending time outdoors connecting with nature.
