In 1872, the massive Billings Forge complex was built to house the Billings & Spencer Company, a drop forging factory. The Romanesque Revival building was converted to affordable housing apartments in the 1980s. In 2005, the Herman Melville Trust acquired the property. To Design was part of the team that redeveloped the properties into market rate/affordable housing, along with neighborhood commercial services, a fine dining restaurant, farmers market and community center.
