Project Details
In 1916, the City of New Britain engaged renowned sculptor Robert Aitken to create a memorial to native son, Elihu Burritt. Aitken in turn commissioned architect H. Van Buren Magonigle to design the base and surrounding terrace. There is some evidence to suggest that landscape architect Ferdinand Vitale provided the planting plan. In 2000, the sculpture and terrace were suffering from 85 years of deferred maintenance. To Design was engaged to provide plans for the cleaning of the sculpture and renovation of the surrounding terrace. The project scope included low pressure cleaning of the limestone and granite, replacement of the bluestone curbing, and replication of a stylized limestone bench. In addition, lighting and plantings were introduced.
